Illinois pharmacies will be able to electronically transfer more prescriptions from one location to another under a state law that takes effect Jan. 1.
The change is intended to allow a pharmacy that cannot fill a prescription to transfer it to another pharmacy with the medication in stock, according to the legislation. The law also creates safeguards for pharmacies as they transition to an electronic system.
The legislation includes exceptions allowing patients to use paper prescriptions for controlled substances in certain circumstances. The bill passed both chambers unanimously in May, and was approved by the governor Aug. 21st.
Illinois has also taken other recent steps on pharmacy access, passing the Patient Access to Pharmacy Protection Act, Aug. 7 to restrict drugmakers from limiting which pharmacies can dispense 340B drugs.
