Mixing AstraZeneca and Pfizer COVID-19 shots boosts antibody levels, study finds

Antibody levels in people who received one dose of AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine followed by one dose of Pfizer’s shot were six times higher than those who received two doses of AstraZeneca’s shot, according to a new study cited by The Hill July 26.

The study, conducted by the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency in South Korea, involved 499 medical workers. One hundred people received one shot of each vaccine, 200 got two doses of Pfizer’s shot, and the rest got two doses of AstraZeneca’s shot.

The results showed that those who got the combination of shots had the same number of neutralizing antibodies as those who got two Pfizer shots, according to The Hill.

The study could lead to countries combining AstraZeneca’s shot with an mRNA vaccine to improve results, The Hill reported. AstraZeneca’s shot is used widely in many countries, but isn’t approved in the U.S.

A separate study conducted in June by British scientists showed that a combination of AstraZeneca and Pfizer’s shots produce the best T-cell and antibody response to COVID-19, The Hill reported.
