Sodium bicarbonate is a vital medicine used daily in hospitals for emergency care. It can be used to treat metabolic acidosis, a condition characterized by an accumulation of acid in the body.

Exela, which recently received FDA approval to manufacture sodium bicarbonate, will produce the injection for Civica.

Initial shipments of the injection to Civica’s members are expected to begin this year.

Civica Rx was founded in 2018 by several big-name hospital systems to boost the access and affordability of generic drugs. More than 39 health systems representing more than 1,000 hospitals are Civica Rx members.
