AIDS Drug Assistance Program Advocacy and the Partnership for Safe Medicines are urging pharmacies to avoid purchasing discounted HIV medications through online pharmacy-to-pharmacy marketplaces, warning the products may qualify as suspect under FDA guidance and the Drug Supply Chain Security Act.
Under the Drug Supply Chain Security Act, dispensers that identify suspect products must quarantine and investigate them and report illegitimate products to the FDA and trading partners within 24 hours, according to a June 30 joint statement. The groups said any HIV medications purchased through these online platforms should be quarantined and verified before being dispensed to patients.
The organizations said the warning is intended to protect patients from potentially diverted or illegitimate HIV medications and urged pharmacies to avoid exposing patients to unnecessary risks by sourcing medications through unverified online marketplaces.
