Wailuku, Hawaii-based Maui Health has partnered with Mauliola Pharmacy to launch bedside prescription delivery services for patients discharged from Maui Memorial Medical Center.
The partnership introduced two programs: Meds to ER, which provides discharge medications to patients leaving the emergency department, including after hours when community pharmacies may be closed, and Meds to Beds, which delivers prescriptions to inpatient rooms before discharge, according to a July 15 news release. Both programs include bedside medication counseling from Mauliola Pharmacy pharmacists and are available at no additional charge beyond normal prescription copays or medication costs, if applicable, for patients covered by most insurance plans.
Maui Health said the programs are designed to help patients leave the hospital with their medications in hand, supporting continuity of care after discharge. The health system cited studies showing that difficulty obtaining medications after discharge can contribute to medication nonadherence and increase the risk of hospital readmission.
