Florida pharmacist gets 10 years for $121M fake claims scheme

A Florida pharmacist was sentenced to 10 years in prison this week for his role in a $121 million compounding pharmacy fraud scheme, the U.S. Justice Department announced.

From 2012 to 2015, Ademola Adebayo and his co-conspirators defrauded private insurers, Medicare, and Tricare, a healthcare program for military service members, by submitting fake claims for compounded drugs that were not medically necessary or were never provided to the patient, according to the Justice Department.

Mr. Adebayo submitted claims that in some instances amounted to several thousands of dollars for a single tube of pain or scar cream,  plaintiffs in the lawsuit charged.

He was convicted in January of conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud, healthcare fraud and conspiracy to commit money-laundering.

Mr. Adebayo worked for the now-defunct A to Z Pharmacy in New Port Richey, Fla.

Eight others involved in the scheme have been sentenced.
