Florida hospital, Publix partner to handle meds to beds, prior authorizations

Publix pharmacy will manage payer authorizations for treatments and deliver prescription drugs to patient beds and the nursing unit at Bradenton, Fla.-based Manatee Memorial Hospital.

The medications will be transported for free, according to a Dec. 15 news release from Manatee Memorial, a subsidiary of King of Prussia, Pa.-based Universal Health Services.

"Our goal in our collaboration with Publix Pharmacy is to provide our patients with the medications they need to keep them healthy before they leave the building," James Wengerd, PharmD, the hospital's pharmacy director, said in a statement. "Patients will leave our hospital knowing what medications to take and how much they cost."

Patients can pay for their prescriptions upon delivery.
