The U.S. shortage of the chemotherapy drug ifosfamide has reached a “critical” stage, according to an Aug. 25 news release from the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
To address the shortage, the FDA is allowing overseas manufacturers to temporarily import the drug.
In an Aug. 21 letter to healthcare professionals, pharmaceutical company SteriMax USA and its distributor GlobalRX said they will begin importing and distributing vials of ifosfamide.
The imported drug product — Ifosfamide for Injection — is not currently approved by the FDA, the letter said.
