Ascension, based in St. Louis, expanded the Dispensary of Hope program across its Ascension Rx pharmacy network, bringing the total number of participating Ascension Rx pharmacies to 35 across nine states.
Over the past six months, 11 Ascension Rx pharmacy locations joined the initiative, according to a Feb. 26 news release. Through the program, donated medications supplied by Dispensary of Hope are dispensed at no cost to uninsured and low-income patients.
Dispensary of Hope is a national nonprofit medication distributor that provides donated medications to more than 300 partner sites nationwide. Across its network, more than 3,500 prescriptions are dispensed each day at no cost. In the last fiscal year, the program supported 1.2 million prescriptions and served 164,000 patients.
Dispensary of Hope reported a 20% reduction in hospital stays and a 27% decrease in utilization costs associated with expanded medication access.
