Amazon employees likely first subscribers to PillPack services

Amazon, which purchased PillPack earlier this year, may soon allow its employees to test out the pharmacy startup's services, CNBC reports.

Here are four things to know:

1. PillPack recently applied for a string of new pharmacy licenses in Washington, New Mexico and Indiana, according to a Nov. 26 report by financial services firm Jefferies cited by CNBC.

2. The Jefferies report notes PillPack's Phoenix distribution center was previously only licensed to ship product to Arizona and New Hampshire, though customers in every state except Hawaii could receive PillPack shipments from other facilities. The Phoenix location is now eligible to ship product to Arizona, New Hampshire, Washington, New Mexico and Indiana.

3. The Washington license is notable because it would give PillPack access to employees at Amazon's Seattle headquarters, Jefferies analysts pointed out. The report also notes the move to roll out PillPack's services to Amazon employees first would not be an unusual step for the retail behemoth, "as the company often pilots new product offerings (Amazon Locker, Amazon Go cashier-less stores) for its own employees and/or in geographies with higher employee concentrations like Seattle prior to a national rollout."

4. Recent job postings on the startup's website reference Amazon's mission to become the "earth's most consumer-centric pharmacy."

"[PillPack is] quietly making progress on the goal of expanding [its] reach, strengthening operational capabilities and reducing delivery times," Stephen Buck, an early employee at prescription drug marketplace GoodRx, told CNBC.
