AHA submits legislative, regulatory recommendations to mitigate drug shortages

The American Hospital Association submitted several legislative, regulatory and best practice recommendations to the FDA Jan. 11 for managing new and chronic prescription drug shortages.

Among its recommendations, the association said Congress should work to strengthen shortage disclosure requirements for drugmakers, incentivize manufacturers to make contingency plans in case of a shortage and assess drug shortages as a national security threat.

The FDA should work to establish a manufacturing quality rating system, improve its drug shortages list, develop a list of critical drugs and disclose more information on the quality of outsourcing facilities that compound drugs during a shortage, it said.
