AbbVie CEO to step down

Richard Gonzalez, the CEO of AbbVie since the drugmaker’s inception in 2013, is exiting the role on July 1.

AbbVie’s president and COO Robert Michael has been named the next CEO, and upon his retirement Mr. Gonzalez will become the executive chair of the company’s board of directors, according to a Feb. 20 news release. 

During AbbVie’s separation from Abbott in 2013, Mr. Michael led the drugmaker’s first financial planning organization and rose through the ranks, from vice president of financial planning to president, COO and now CEO.
