Active drug shortages in the U.S. rose for the second consecutive quarter in 2026, reaching 223 in the first quarter, according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists — and the FDA’s database continues to reflect new discontinuations weekly. The database is updated daily to reflect manufacturing recoveries, regulatory actions and how shortages are classified — not solely day-to-day availability at the hospital level.
Here are eight recent drug shortages, according to the FDA database:
- Liraglutide injection: Teva Pharmaceuticals discontinued the 6-milligram/milliliter formulation May 14.
- Activated charcoal oral suspension: Padagis discontinued the Actidose and Actidose Aqua 208-milligram/milliliter presentations May 15.
- Alteplase injection: Genentech discontinued the 100-milligram Activase vial configuration May 21.
- Gadoterate meglumine injection: Jiangsu Hengrui Pharmaceuticals, marketed by Fresenius Kabi, discontinued all four vial sizes of the 376.9-milligram/milliliter formulation May 21.
- Iron sucrose injection: Mylan Institutional, a Viatris company, discontinued the 50-milligram/2.5-milliliter presentation only on May 21; other iron sucrose presentations remain available.
- Dehydrated alcohol injection: Accord Healthcare discontinued the 10-pack 1-milliliter/milliliter configuration as it transitions to a 5-pack format May 27.
- Carboplatin injection: Teyro Labs, distributed by Apotex, discontinued the 50-, 150-, 450- and 600-milligram vials June 1.
- Clindamycin phosphate injection: Pfizer discontinued all six Cleocin Phosphate vial presentations — 300-, 600- and 900-milligram strengths in both standard and NovaPlus configurations — June 1.
