8 new drugs in shortage

Active drug shortages in the U.S. rose for the second consecutive quarter in 2026, reaching 223 in the first quarter, according to the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists — and the FDA’s database continues to reflect new discontinuations weekly. The database is updated daily to reflect manufacturing recoveries, regulatory actions and how shortages are classified — not solely day-to-day availability at the hospital level.

Here are eight recent drug shortages, according to the FDA database:

1. Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride injection: Slayback Pharma discontinued the 4-microgram/milliliter formulation in two presentations on June 5.
2. Dacomitinib tablet: Pfizer discontinued all three strengths of Vizimpro, including 15-, 30- and 45-milligram tablets, on June 8.
3. Leflunomide tablet: Sanofi-Aventis discontinued all three strengths of Arava (10, 20 and 100 milligrams) as well as two generic leflunomide presentations on June 8.
4. Ifosfamide injection: Currently in shortage as of June 12. Baxter Healthcare lists the 3-gram/60-milliliter presentation as unavailable with an estimated recovery of October 2026; Fresenius Kabi and Hikma Pharmaceuticals also report limited or backordered supply, with next releases expected in the June–August timeframe.
5. Donepezil hydrochloride; memantine hydrochloride capsule, extended release: Amneal Pharmaceuticals discontinued both the 10-milligram/14-milligram and 10-milligram/28-milligram extended-release capsule formulations on June 15.
6. Lorlatinib tablet: Pfizer discontinued the 120-tablet bottle configuration of Lorbrena 25 milligrams on June 15, with supply expected to exhaust on June 30. The 30-tablet bottle presentation will continue to be manufactured.
7. Emtricitabine capsule: Gilead Sciences discontinued the Emtriva 200-milligram capsule on June 17, but the product is expected to remain available until March 2027.
8. Emtricitabine oral solution: Gilead Sciences discontinued the Emtriva 10-milligram/milliliter oral solution on June 17, but the product is expected to remain available until March 2027.
