6 recent pharmaceutical industry layoffs

Becker's Hospital Review has reported the following six drug, biotech or retail pharmacy company layoffs in the last two weeks. They are listed below, beginning with the most recent.

1. Takeda to close Illinois headquarters, begin layoffs Aug. 30
Takeda Pharmaceuticals will close its headquarters in Deerfield, Ill. by Dec. 31, consolidating its U.S. operations to a location near Boston. The decision will result in layoffs. 

2. Massachusetts biotech to cut 220 jobs, suspend most R&D projects
Following an operational review, Waltham, Mass.-based biotech ImmunoGen will lay off 220 employees and suspend some research and development.

3. Walmart cutting some pharmacy jobs
Seeking to reduce costs, retail giant Walmart plans to eliminate some jobs in its U.S. pharmacy business.

4. San Diego biotech to cut 40% of staff
Conatus Pharmaceuticals, a biotechnology company in San Diego, is implementing a restructuring plan that includes laying off 40 percent of its staff after its liver disease drug failed a midstage trial. 

5. Sanofi to cut 466 jobs
Global pharmaceutical company Sanofi will cut 466 jobs in France and Germany as it works to reorganize its research and development operations.

6. Wyoming pharma company closing in September; 80 expected to lose jobs
Wyoming pharmaceutical company Cody Laboratories will shut down operations in September, resulting in about 80 employees losing their jobs.
