3 candidates in the running for FDA commissioner: 4 notes

In addition to acting FDA Commissioner Ned Sharpless, MD, two other candidates are in the running to take the position, according to The Wall Street Journal.

Four things to know:

1. Alexa Boer Kimball, MD, is one of the candidates. She serves as a dermatology professor at Cambridge, Mass.-based Harvard University and CEO of Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston.

2. The other candidate is a physician at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, according to people familiar with the discussions who declined to identify the person.

3. Dr. Sharpless, a favorite to secure the post, became acting FDA commissioner in April, when Scott Gottlieb resigned. Before  taking on his role at the FDA, Dr. Sharpless was director of the National Cancer Institute.

4. A White House official told the Journal that other candidates are in the running.
