11 drugs in shortage

Here are 11 new shortages and discontinuations, according to drug supply databases from the FDA and the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists. 

  1. Albuterol sulfate solution: Nephron Pharmaceuticals has reported a shortage of albuterol sulfate solution in 2.5 mg/.5 mL, a bronchodilator used to treat asthma and other pulmonary conditions, due to delays in shipping.
  2. Amlodipine besylate, hydrochlorothiazide, olmesartan medoxomil tablet: Torrent Pharma has discontinued multiple presentations of this combination medication used to treat hypertension and cardiovascular conditions. The discontinuation is based on business decisions.
  3. Ethinyl estradiol, ethinyl diacetate tablet: Teva Pharmaceuticals has discontinued Zovia 1/50E-28 tablet kits, a contraceptive medication used in reproductive health.
  4. Ethinyl estradiol, etonogestrel ring: Teva Pharmaceuticals has discontinued this contraceptive vaginal ring used for birth control.
  5. Fluticasone propionate, salmeterol xinafoate powder: Teva Pharmaceuticals has discontinued all presentations of AirDuo RespiClick powder, a combination inhaler used to manage asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
  6. Phentermine hydrochloride tablet: Teva Pharmaceuticals has discontinued 37.5 mg Adipex-P tablets, a weight loss medication. 
  7. Pravastatin sodium tablet: Teva Pharmaceuticals has discontinued all strengths from 10 mg to 80 mg of its pravastatin sodium tablets, which are used to lower cholesterol and reduce cardiovascular risk.
  8. Scopolamine transdermal system: Baxter and Teva have reported shortages of scopolamine transdermal patches in 1.3 mg and 1.5 mg presentations, used to prevent nausea and motion sickness. Neither manufacturer has provided a reason for the shortage. Alternative supplies are available from Ingenus, Padagis, Rhodes, Viatris and Zydus.
  9. Testosterone gel: Actavis Pharma has discontinued the manufacture of testosterone gel used to treat low testosterone levels in men in 16.2 mg/1 g presentations. 
  10. Tbo-filgrastim injection: Cephalon LLC has discontinued Granix injection in 480 ug/1.6 mL presentations, a hematology drug used to stimulate white blood cell production in patients undergoing chemotherapy.
  11. Tobramycin solution: Teva Pharmaceuticals has discontinued all presentations of tobramycin solution in 300 mg/4 mL and 300 mg/5 mL, an antibiotic used to treat respiratory infections mainly in cystic fibrosis patients.
