UnitedHealth taps former KPMG exec for board of directors

Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group named Timothy Flynn to the company's board of directors.

Here are four things to know about the appointment.

1. Mr. Flynn is a member of the board of directors of JPMorgan Chase, Wal-Mart Stores, Alcoa and a member of the board of trustees of the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn.

2. He previously served as chairman of accounting firm KPMG International from 2007 until his retirement in October 2011. He led the global executive team responsible for the management and operations of the global network. He also chaired the global board responsible for the strategy, oversight and governance of the global network.

3. Mr. Flynn worked with KPMG for 32 years. He served as chairman from 2005 to 2010 and CEO of KPMG International's U.S. member firm from 2005 to 2008.

4. UnitedHealth CEO Stephen Hemsley said in a statement the company "will benefit from Tim Flynn's 37 years of experience leading and working with diverse global businesses in regulated environments, along with his keen insights and expertise in finance and business strategy."
