UnitedHealth profits rising; Optum revenues up — 5 key points

UnitedHealth Group has released promising numbers for the second quarter of fiscal year 2015.

Here are five key points from the company’s second-quarter earnings statement.

1. UnitedHealth’s revenue increased 11 percent to $36.3 billion.

2. Revenue attributable to the company’s Optum segment — which includes OptumHealth, OptumInsight and OptumRx — grew 16 percent year-over-year to $13.6 billion.

3. Revenue attributable to UnitedHealthcare increased to $33.1 billion in the second quarter, up 10 percent from the same period of last year.

4. UnitedHealth’s medical care ratio — the amount the insurer spent on actual healthcare costs — fell to 81.4 percent in the second quarter of 2015.

5. The company’s net income grew to nearly $1.6 billion, up from about $1.4 billion in the same period of 2014.
