UnitedHealth adds former GlaxoSmithKline CEO, medical school president to board

Minnetonka, Minn.-based UnitedHealth Group named Valerie Montgomery Rice, MD, and Sir Andrew Witty to its board.

Here are five things to know about the appointments.

Dr. Rice

1. Dr. Rice is president and dean of Atlanta-based Morehouse School of Medicine. She became president of MSM in 2014 and was the executive vice president and dean for the school from 2011 to 2014. 

2. She is a council member of the National Institute of Health's National Center for Advancing Translational Science, a member of the National Academy of Medicine and an infertility specialist and women's health researcher. 

Sir Witty

3. Sir Witty served as CEO and a board member of global pharmaceutical firm GlaxoSmithKline, headquartered in Brentford, U.K., from 2008 to April 2017.

4. He is chancellor of the University of Nottingham in England and a business ambassador for the U.K. Prime Minister. He also serves on the Singapore Economic Development Board International Advisory Committee, the Council at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and as an advisor to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

5. Sir Witty was knighted in 2012 for services to the economy and the U.K. pharmaceutical industry.
