The program’s elimination is a result of enrollment decline, the Affordable Care Act’s mandate that all Americans have health insurance and an ACA provision allowing dependents to receive coverage under their parents’ plans until age 26.
The program covered about 1,800 students at its height, according to the report. But by spring 2016, enrollees dipped to 588.
Students and families were informed via letter in May about the change and another follow-up letter was sent in June. UAlbany hired navigators through Sept. 23 to assist students during the transition. Coverage will cease Aug. 19, though university health plans for international students will remain.
