Texas A&M Health, BCBS may use drones, self-driving cars to improve rural health

College Station-based Texas A&M University Health Science Center and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas finalized an agreement for a new rural health project in Texas, the healthcare companies said March 11.

The initiative, launched in November, aims to improve rural healthcare in the state through several programs. One of the projects includes exploring how self-driving vehicles, drones and tele-connected ambulance services could affect healthcare transportation and access issues in rural communities.

The healthcare companies are also going to examine claims data before and after a hospital closure to get a better understanding of how such an incident affects a community's health and mortality rates.

BCBS of Texas committed $10 million to the Texas A&M Health Science Center as part of the joint project.
