State insurance marketplaces offered $20M in grants from CMS

State-based insurance marketplaces are now eligible for $20 million in new grant money from the CMS to modernize their systems, programs and technology.

CMS is providing up to 21 grants via American Rescue Plan funding, which also included an expansion of financial aid to some customers. The grants look to assist marketplaces seeing an influx of enrollment and eligibility changes due to the ARP.

The grants come with stipulations, as applicants must meet a series of requirements, including using HealthCare.gov for determining eligibility and enrollment.

However, funding can be used to revamp digital infrastructure to be more in line with outlined government requirements. Funding may also be used on policies or programs, such as consumer notifications and education, training, reporting and more.

Applications are open through July 20 with awards issued in early September 2021.
