The contract is effective April 22, when the previous agreement was set to expire. It applies to 12 RWJBarnabas hospitals and all Aetna policies.

Last month, Aetna and RWJBarnabas reached an impasse over reimbursement rates. Aetna spokesperson Walter Cherniak Jr. told NJ.com RWJBarnabas sought “significant rate increases” that could not “be supported in the market.” At the time, RWJBarnabas said it would continue negotiations with the payer to sign a new contract.
