North Carolina DOI needs more time to investigate BCBS system failure

The North Carolina Department of Insurance determined it will need to further examine Durham-based health insurer Blue Cross Blue Shield regarding its January system failure.

The DOI vowed to investigate the insurer in February after a system failure led to approximately 25,000 customers being placed on incorrect plans. As a result, billing was incorrect and members did not know if they were covered.

An initial examination by the DOI was submitted to BCBS of North Carolina on May 31, and while interactions with the insurer have been ongoing, the department says disagreements over the examination's findings persist.

As a result, the DOI will do an additional examination and "hopefully move toward a resolution," according to a statement. The department does not know when a resolution will be reached.
