“Year-to-date activity suggests that Medicaid will finish the year under budget,” said Trey Sutten, finance director for North Carolina’s Medicaid program, according to the Winston-Salem Journal.
The state initially set aside approximately $2 billion for Medicaid spending for the first six months of the 2015 fiscal year ending Dec. 31. But it came in at $181 million — or 9.3 percent — under budget through Dec. 31.
Nearly 1.9 million North Carolinians are enrolled in the state’s Medicaid program.
The under budget finances are due to lower use of services, flat enrollment levels and changes in population profile and legislation, according to the Winston Salem-Journal.
