Medicaid covers 43% of childbirths

Medicaid paid for about 2 in 5 births, or 43 percent of all deliveries, in 2017, according to recent data from the CDC.

The percentage was up 1 percent year over year, and it increased for all maternal age groups. Women aged 30 and over saw the largest year-over-year coverage increases, up 3 to 4 percent.

In terms of general fertility, the U.S. saw rates fall 3 percent in 2017 compared to 2016. The teen birth rate fell 7 percent from 2016 to 2017, to 18.8 births for every 1,000 females age 15 to 19.
