Humana wins $3.8B Tricare contract extension

Louisville, Ky.-based Humana received a one-year extension of its healthcare delivery managed care contract with the Defense Health Agency valued at an estimated $3.8 billion.

The contract covers approximately 3 million beneficiaries for Tricare's — a program that provides healthcare services to military personnel — South Region. The Department of Defense said Humana helps the Military Health System adjudicate more than 240 million medical claims each year.

While the contract extension covers the area in which Humana already provides managed care, its service area will grow to about 6 million under Tricare's reassigned East Region contract (which combines the former North and South Regions) beginning in 2017. Humana won the East Region contract in July 2016, worth an estimated $40.5 billion.

The contract for South Region coverage will expire March 31, 2018.
