Humana screened 500,000 members for social determinants of health in 2018

Half a million of Humana's members, employees and patients were screened for social determinants of health last year, according to the health insurer's fourth annual "Bold Goal Progress Report."

The report, which measures improvement in health and chronic conditions among Humana's Medicare Advantage members, tracks how close the health insurer is to achieving its goal of improving health by 20 percent in several communities by 2020.

The health insurer said it worked with business partners, physician practices and community programs to screen members for food insecurity and loneliness. Individuals who showed problems with social determinants of health were referred to community resources, according to the insurer. Humana now wants to screen 1 million people for social determinants of health by the end of 2019.

In addition to the screenings, Humana Medicare Advantage members in seven communities lowered their "Unhealthy Days" by 2.7 percent since 2015, the health insurer said. Humana tracks "Healthy Days" using the CDC's quality of life measurement.

While overall Unhealthy Days have improved, members' mentally Unhealthy Days offset some gains. For example, Humana Medicare Advantage members in Florida's Broward County saw a 3.6 percent increase in overall Unhealthy Days due to higher mentally Unhealthy Days and depression.
