Health insurers in the news: Feb. 4-11

The following insurers made headlines this week. They are listed below, beginning with the most recent.

1. Patient First stops accepting some Anthem plans
Richmond, Va.-based Patient First — the state's largest provider of urgent and primary care — is no longer accepting a number of Anthem plans, according to WTVR.com.

2. Cigna CFO says ACA exchanges could be beneficial to insurers
Although numerous health insurers — including Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna — have expressed financial concerns over the Affordable Care Act exchanges, Cigna's CFO went against the grain, according to the Hartford Courant.

3. BCBS may leave ACA market in NC next year
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina may leave the ACA market in 2017 if it continues to lose money, CEO Brad Wilson said, according to a report from The News & Observer.

4. Humana's Q4 earnings on track with predictions
Louisville, Ky.-based Humana released its 2015 fourth quarter earnings — which were in line with the company's initial predictions — in conjunction with its projections for fiscal year 2016.

5. Ky. insurance commissioner grants Humana-Aetna approval without public hearing
As the U.S. Department of Justice reviews Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna's proposed acquisition of Louisville, Ky.-based Humana, the Kentucky insurance commissioner approved the merger without a formal public hearing, according to Insider Louisville.

6. Northwell Health insurer more than triples enrollment
East Hills, N.Y.-based CareConnect — Great Neck, N.Y.-based Northwell Health's subsidiary health insurance plan — enrolled 91,193 members this year, up from 26,567 last year, according to Crain's New York Business.

7. Molina Healthcare sees profit increase as revenue jumps 45.6%
Molina Healthcare saw its revenue increase in 2015, as the health insurer benefited from enrollment growth.

8. NC state insurance commissioner: BCBS failure is 'an emergency that's nowhere near being stabilized'
Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina experienced systematic problems throughout the month of January, and North Carolina insurance commissioner Wayne Goodwin says the problem is far from being fixed, according to ABC11.

9. Cigna reports 2015 financial results
Bloomfield, Conn.-based health insurer Cigna reported its fiscal year 2015 fourth quarter results, as well as its results for the full year.

10. Empire BCBS cuts broker commissions
New York City-based Empire BlueCross BlueShield will cut its insurance broker commissions, meaning it won't pay brokers to sign members up for its plans, according to Crain's New York Business.
