Cigna CFO says ACA exchanges could be beneficial to insurers

Although numerous health insurers — including Hartford, Conn.-based Aetna — have expressed financial concerns over the Affordable Care Act exchanges, Cigna's CFO has gone against the grain, according to the Hartford Courant.

"We knew those early years on the exchange would be volatile. We expected a plan where we would lose money these past few years, and by golly, we've delivered on that plan," said Cigna CFO Tom McCarthy at the Leerink Partners conference Feb. 11, according to the report.

"We expect to lose money again in 2016," he added. "That, to me, does not undermine the long-term attractiveness of the market. I do expect that over time, the market will evolve to be attractive for the industry generally, and for Cigna in particular."

Cigna has approximately 204,000 individual customers across the U.S.
