Gateway Health drops 2 Medicare plans

Pittsburgh-based Gateway Health Plan will end two Medicare plans for chronically ill seniors next year, affecting about 5,000 members, Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports.

The insurer cited rising drug and other healthcare costs as culprits. Affected plans include Gateway's Medicare Assured Platinum and Gold plans, packaged with lower prescription drug costs and special visits for diabetes and cardiovascular treatment.

Plan holders will sustain coverage through Dec. 31. Afterward, they will need to find a general Medicare Advantage plan or enroll in traditional Medicare. Gateway does not sell general Medicare Advantage plans in west Pennsylvania, according to the report.

Others who do not enroll in different plans will be enrolled in traditional Medicare and a drug plan.
