Firefighters rally, call on Cigna, Mary Washington Healthcare to reach agreement

A group of firefighters from Virginia to Maryland rallied outside of Fredericksburg, Va.-based Mary Washington Hospital on Aug. 7 amid calls for an agreement between Mary Washington Healthcare and Cigna.

After the provider and insurer ended their contract in May over payment rates, 15,000 Fredericksburg-area residents are in limbo, according to The Free Lance-Star. Mary Washington Healthcare points to a 30 percent reimbursement rate cut as the deal-breaker, while Cigna says the requested rates are too high for customers, according to the report.

Local firefighter union leaders are calling on the companies to continue negotiations and stood in the rain with "Stand With Us" shirts on during the weekend protest.

Executives are set to meet the week of Aug. 9 to further discuss the dispute.
