Fallon Health includes Medicare members in at-home COVID-19 test coverage

Worcester, Mass.-based payer Fallon Health is covering at-home COVID-19 tests for its Medicare members in a move to extend coverage beyond upcoming federal requirements, according to a Jan. 13 news release shared with Becker's

HHS announced private insurers must cover at-home COVID-19 tests effective Jan. 15. However, the move only includes those with private health insurance coverage or covered by a group health plan.

Fallon Health's decision "takes federal guidance one step further" in its move to cover both individuals in private and government-sponsored plans that include pharmacy benefits, according to the news release. Previously, the payer's Medicare members would only have tests covered if they were ordered by a healthcare provider.

"Older adults have been disproportionately impacted by the pandemic," said Richard Burke, president and CEO of Fallon Health. "Arming them with tools to protect themselves and their loved ones is not only the just thing, but it advances our mission to improve the health of the communities we serve by fighting the spread of COVID."
