Covered California mails premium increase alerts to 1.3M

California's state health insurance exchange started contacting 1.3 million consumers via mail last week with notifications about the cost of their 2017 premiums, California Healthline reports.

In July Covered California said some health plans would rise an average 13.2 percent following a two-year reprieve from double-digit rate increases.

The mail notices advise consumers to enter their Covered California accounts and use the exchange's shopping comparison tool to evaluate premiums and calculate their cost.

Covered California's communications director Amy Palmer said roughly 80 percent of affected consumers will be able to keep premium rate increases to 5 percent if they price compare with other plans, according to the report.
