CMS approves Clover Health's expansion into 101 new counties

CMS gave Nashville, Tenn.-based Clover Health the go-ahead to expand into 101 new counties between five states — including Alabama, which it will be entering for the first time.

The expansion nearly doubles Clover's reach, which swells to 209 counties, according to a Sept. 22 news release

In addition to Alabama, the insurer is entering counties in Georgia, New Jersey, South Carolina and Texas.

"With CMS's approval of our significant expansion efforts, we will be bringing affordable, wide network plans to additional previously underserved communities, which we believe is the key to achieving health equity for America’s aging population," said Andrew Toy, president and chief technology officer at Clover Health. "Nearly doubling our service counties in one year demonstrates the differentiated scalability of our approach as compared to certain other plans which are constrained to narrow service areas orbiting specific providers."

Clover Health will launch its Medicare Advantage offerings in its new markets Jan. 1, 2022.
