Cigna to enter individual ACA marketplace in Chicago area

Bloomfield, Conn.-based payer Cigna will sell individual health plans on and off the Affordable Care Act marketplace in the Chicago area for coverage beginning Jan. 1.

The plans, called Cigna Connect, will network with a majority of Arlington Heights, Ill.-based AMITA Health and Chicago-based Presence Health primary care physicians, hospitals and specialty practices.

The plans will be offered in five Illinois counties — Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kankakee and Will.

Aetna, UnitedHealthcare and its subsidiary Harken Health will exit Illinois' market in 2017. Prior to Cigna's entrance, the Illinois Department of Insurance said three-fourths of Illinois counties will have one or two payers offering coverage next year on the state's ACA exchange.
