Mr. Cordani is involved in a nonprofit running program called Achilles International, which pairs injured veterans with guides who help them complete races, according to People. Most recently, his participation in the program allowed him to compete as a guide for Stefan LeRoy in the Boston Marathon on April 18.
Mr. LeRoy, a former Army sergeant, lost both his legs when he was hit by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in 2012. Earlier this week, Mr. LeRoy utilized his prosthetic legs to run in his first full marathon with Mr. Cordani by his side.
Through Achilles International, Mr. Cordani has also run a marathon with former Army Master Sergeant Cedric King, another double amputee who lost his legs in Afghanistan.
With all his previous experience, Mr. Cordani knows what to do as a guide. To prevent his partner from slipping on the waxy discarded water cups, Mr. Cordani runs to the side of the road and obtains a cup of water for him. In addition, he consistently encourages his running partner to stay positive throughout the marathon.
Above all, it’s an inspiring way for Mr. Cordani to give back. “It’s an unbelievably rewarding and positive experience,” said Mr. Cordani, according to the Hartford Courant.
