BCBS of South Carolina overbilled $399K under chiropractors' fraud scheme, charges allege

Two chiropractors in South Carolina are scheduled for trial Aug. 13 on federal charges of overbilling BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina $399,000 in fraudulent claims, according to Myrtle Beach Online.

The operators of a clinic in Conway, S.C., John Pienkos II and Alexander Tomovski, face up to 10 years in prison for an alleged patient billing scheme that took place from 2012 to 2016, according to the charges. The chiropractors schemed to have BCBS patients visit the clinic, regardless of medical necessity, until they reached their coverage limits, the charges claim.

The chiropractors excessively billed BCBS at least $399,000, according to the indictment. The defendants' lawyers, however, said the charges are "baseless allegations," and the defendants engaged in "lawful billing practices," according to Myrtle Beach Online.
