BCBS of NC ends contract with Carteret Health Care

The contract between Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina and Morehead City, N.C.-based Carteret Health Care will end Feb. 1, 2016, meaning Carteret will become out-of-network for BCBS consumers.

Blue Cross and Blue Shield dubbed CHC "one of the most expensive hospitals in the state." The insurer also called CHC's quality into question, claiming its "quality of care ... ranks lower than the care provided by most hospitals in the state."

CHC denied such allegations, saying although the systems were making progress on a new contract, "BCBSNC changed our account representative and has refused to meaningfully collaborate with us ever since."

"We want to negotiate with BCBSNC on a new, rebalanced contract that is fair and reasonable to our health system, patients and the entire community," CHC said in a statement. "Simply put, we cannot accept a contract that threatens our financial stability as an independent hospital."
