BCBS of Minnesota scoops up Anthem exec as CEO: 4 notes

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Minnesota, along with its umbrella company, Stella, named Craig Samitt, MD, president and CEO of BCBSM effective July 30.

Here are four notes on the appointment:

1. Dr. Samitt brings almost 25 years of healthcare leadership experience to his new role. He is joining BCBSM from Anthem, where he most recently served as executive vice president and chief clinical officer.

2. At Anthem, Dr. Samitt advanced the insurer's value-based payment models and provider partnerships.

3. Dr. Samitt, an internal medicine physician by training, held several senior executive positions before joining Anthem. He was partner and global provider practice leader at Oliver Wyman; president and CEO of DaVita subsidiary HealthCare Partners; and president and CEO of Madison, Wis.-based Dean Health System, which is now under St. Louis-based SSM Health.

4. Dr. Samitt will succeed Kathleen Blatz, who has served as interim CEO since March 2018 when Michael Guyette stepped down to helm VSP Global.
