Three things to know:
1. BCBS of Michigan posted an operating margin of $605 million on revenue of $29.3 billion for fiscal 2018, based on generally accepted accounting principles. The health insurer’s operating margin was 2.1 percent in 2018.
2. The health insurer also saw its national membership grow to 5.3 million members in 2018, with Michigan membership growing by 89,577 members. BCBS of Michigan said strong gains in its new small group business and high retention among its existing small group businesses boosted the growth.
3. BCBS of Michigan said it will use $187 million in positive margin brought in by its workers’ compensation subsidiary AF Group to help make its core health offerings more affordable.
