Anthem to buy one of nation's biggest behavioral health providers

Anthem entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the nation's largest independently held behavioral health organization, Beacon Health Options, the companies said June 6.

Five things to know:

1. Anthem said the acquisition aligns with its strategy to diversify into health services and expand care delivery models for its members with complex and chronic conditions. The companies said improved clinical expertise, analytics, health data and provider networks will help them achieve this goal.

2. Anthem will buy Beacon from Bain Capital Private Equity and Diamond Castle Holdings for an undisclosed amount.

3. Beacon, based in Boston, serves more than 36 million individuals nationwide. Nearly 3 million of its patients are in comprehensive risk-based behavioral programs.

4. After completion of the deal, which is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2019, Beacon and Anthem's behavioral health business will operate within Anthem's diversified business group.

5. Beacon President and CEO Russell Petrella, PhD, and other Beacon executives will join Anthem's diversified business group to lead the behavioral health segment.
