Anthem-Cigna merger moves forward after shareholders approve deal

Shareholders of Anthem and Cigna overwhelmingly approved the merger of the two health plans during a special shareholder meeting on Thursday.

With the shareholder vote completed, Indianapolis-based Anthem's $54.2 billion takeover of Bloomfield, Conn.-based Cigna is one step closer to completion. However, the deal still needs approval of state and federal regulators.

The two organizations expect to complete the deal in the second half of 2016.
