America's Health Insurance Plans launches initiative to fight opioid misuse

The health insurance industry's largest trade group, America's Health Insurance Plans, unveiled its Safe, Transparent Opioid Prescribing initiative.

STOP advocates for widespread use of clinical guidelines informing opioid prescriptions and pain management. AHIP's first action is the launch of STOP Measure, which helps health plans measure how providers compare to the CDC's opioid prescription guidelines.

"The STOP Measure takes these efforts much further by establishing an industrywide approach to measuring performance against the CDC guidelines, tracking and reducing the number of opioid prescriptions," AHIP said. Information gathered from the STOP Measure will be distributed among health plans as initial results are gathered in the next months.

This is the latest initiative announced by a big insurance player to fight opioid misuse. Earlier this month, Bloomfield, Conn.-based Cigna said it will remove OxyContin from its covered drug list Jan. 1.
