AI at Humana: 4 things to know

Artificial intelligence is woven across Humana, from finding value to training employees, Slawek Kierner, Humana's chief data and analytics officer, said during an AI Summit panel discussion, according to InformationWeek

Four things to know about Humana and artificial intelligence, according to InformationWeek:

1.Mr. Kierner said that what brought him to Humana from his position at Microsoft was the amount of data the payer collected through health plans, its value-based care model and its at-home healthcare services. The sheer amount of data served as a strong backbone for artificial intelligence development.

2. Joining the payer in 2018, Mr. Kierner said shifting to a cloud-based system was a critical first step. Then, he looked for projects that could highlight the benefits of artificial intelligence before integrating it laterally.

3. Where Humana's AI endeavors started piquing the most interest was in its ability to determine how many hospital readmissions were avoided due to improved care.

4. Mr. Kierner also developed artificial intelligence training for executives to ease its deployment. That training then trickles down several managerial levels.
