AHIP names 4 industry policy priorities

America's Health Insurance Plans outlined four key issues that healthcare needs to solve in a July 8 statement.

Four things to know:

1. Leading the list is prioritizing recovering from the coronavirus pandemic, which insurers have done through supporting healthcare workers and implementing policies that encourage vaccination.

2. As the most popular way Americans get insurance, bolstering employer-provided coverage is key to developing healthcare quality and stability. AHIP cited a study noting employer-provided coverage influenced job selection for 75 percent of respondents.

3. AHIP encouraged supporting Medicare Advantage plans, which insure 26 million Americans. With bipartisan support and reduced taxpayer costs, continuing to build out plans is integral to supporting seniors and those with disabilities, AHIP said.

4. Finally, further focus on social determinants of health — housing accessibility, food security, access to transportation and more — has a significant effect on public health, AHIP said. The list encouraged insurers to continue to offer services that combat health-adjacent social barriers to continue to improve public health as a whole.
