AHIP Leader Advocates for Delaying PPACA Health Insurance Tax

America's Health Insurance Plans CEO Karen Ignagni has advocated for a two-year delay of a health insurance tax included in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, according to a Bloomberg report.

At AHIP's annual State Issues Conference, Ms. Ignagni called the tax "one of the largest and more important barriers" to healthcare affordability, according to the report. Under the healthcare reform law, health insurers must pay the excise tax or annual fee starting in 2014.

The tax will result in an estimated $15 billion in fiscal years 2014 and 2015. AHIP has pushed to repeal the tax, saying the revenue could come from lower-than-expected health insurance premium increases and delivery reforms instead.
