ACA insurers in New York, Washington plan to raise premiums at least 19%

Insurers on the ACA exchanges in New York and Washington state are proposing double-digit premium hikes in 2019, according to The Hill.

Thirteen of 14 New York insurers are seeking approval for an average rate hike of 24 percent from state regulators, and 11 Washington payers want to increase premiums by 19.08 percent, on average.

Insurers in Washington blamed the uncertain future of the ACA under President Donald Trump's administration for the rate hikes while those in New York blamed them on the repeal of the ACA's individual mandate next year.

"With respect to the individual market, the single biggest justification offered by insurers for the requested increases is the Trump administration's repeal of the individual mandate penalty," New York's Department of Financial Services said, according to The Hill.

Fidelis in New York is requesting a 38.6 percent rate increase, while Emblem is seeking a 31.5 hike.
