90% of California coordinated care enrollees satisfied with coverage: 5 key findings

An evaluation of Cal MediConnect, the health plan covering Medicare and Medi-Cal beneficiaries, revealed 90 percent of enrollees were satisfied with their health insurance coverage.

Here are five key findings from the survey.

1. Eighty-three percent of respondents said their quality of care was "generally good or excellent."

2. Seventy-seven percent of new CMC enrollees were able to keep the same primary care providers after transitioning to CMC. Sixty-six percent kept all of their specialists, and 20 percent kept some specialists. Of those who visited a hospital, 91 percent were able to go to their preferred facility. Seventy-four percent of CMC enrollees did not have to switch medications.

3. Recently transitioned CMC enrollees reported greater ease getting appointments with primary (28 percent) and specialty physicians (26 percent). Less than 10 percent said their access to care decreased.

4. A quarter of enrollees surveyed said their new plan has "done something to make it 'safer or easier' to live in their home," like home modification, assistive technology, transportation and additional personal assistance. However, 34 percent still have unmet personal assistance needs.

5. One in five beneficiaries reported some disruptions in care while transitioning to MediConnect. Twenty-one percent said some of their disruptions were resolved and 35 percent said all were.

The survey was conducted by the UCSF Community Living Policy Center and the UC Berkeley Health Research for Action Center. Researchers telephoned 2,139 beneficiaries in early 2016 to conduct the survey.
